Society
As I walk through the long, treacherous halls of my school, I know they're whispering about me. Maybe it's because they're "jealous" or maybe it's because I'm not who they want me to be.
The dirty looks they give me signal the awful hatred that comes my way, so in my mind I mentally prepare, for ahead of me, I have a tough day.
But no mental preparation can support me through what might come. Nothing at all can mend the pain intentionally caused by some.
This is our world today, this is our disgraceful society. A kid should walk into school excited and ready to learn, not filled with anxiety.
For society labels us this and society labels us that. Society labels us as ugly, society labels us as fat.
So we strive... We strive for perfection. We strive so that way, one day, they'll be able to love our reflection.
But our reflection is only just the crust of something much, much more. Something that our classmates never bothered to look for.
Once, someone did look deeper but they damaged our being and did us wrong. So we have built our walls high and we have built them incredibly strong.
Although, we do have a door. But we locked that door and we threw away the key, hoping that now they'll never get in and now they'll never see.
So next time someone labels you a name, a name that you're not. Don't let it crush you because your sanity is all you've got.
And soon you'll probably lose that too, but you can't let them see. You can't let them see that you're broken, scarred, beat up, and bruised. Anything but lovely.
Because that's what they want, they want to see you fall. They want to see you scrape your knees and have no choice, but to crawl.
Don't give them what they want. Show them that you can be free. Don't let society define who you are because you are you, and that's the best you you'll ever be.
Yes, their words do hurt, and I believe they always will. But you have to block out what you don't want to hear and guard your heart from what you don't want it to feel.
So as I stand in the middle of the school cafeteria searching for a place to sit, I realize that to society, everyone is a misfit.
And we can't blame this hurt on them. We can't blame the world today on society. Because look around, there's so many people, and society begins with you and with me.
