Black Girl Magic

Black girl magic.

Got quite a ring to it, don’t it?

See, us black girls, we are the definition of  magical.

Nah, we're more than magical. We got this kind of charm that puts you in trance.

Our melanin is like an elixir that can get you enchanted; it's addictive, makes you want more till you can’t get enough of our chocolate ecstasy, our warm cocoa butter kisses.

We glow, you see. Like fireflies in the dark night, or flashlights, or rays from the sun’s light.

Damn aren’t we radiant?

Wouldn’t anyone think that people who shine so damn bright and beam so erratically would be deemed beautiful in the modern world?

Wouldn’t they be attracted to our hair, that can form the tightest curl with a touch of cantu

Yet will be seen as unprofessional at an office interview.

Or what about our skin, that bonds us together, despite the variety of colors within

Yet society has punctured us extensively to a point where we have turned on each other with  trends such as #teamdarkskin and #teamlightskin

What people don’t get is that whether you’re as dark as the night sky, or as light as the stars that bask in it

We are all part of this unexplainable galaxy

And ain't that some sort of beautiful sorcery

Ain't it unbelievable, confusing, remarkable, and beautiful all at once?

Ain't that what magic consists of? Leaving you in suspense with a feeling of desire?

Black girl magic.

Yah, we’re definitely more than magical.

We are powerful, we are strong,we have strength

And we overcome the odds.

We have fought to recognize our delicacy and elegance.

We don’t represent “the hood” by showing off our goods as the guys think we should.

Instead, we set goals to strive and show them that we can survive in a society where it's most difficult to thrive as a black girl.

We have this luminescence that we will continue to use to amaze and astonish

Because at the end of the day, ain’t that what magic does?
