Changing the Fated End: A Blackout Poem from George Orwell's "1984"

A false memory

The chessboard, the white knight

Almost in the same instant

Victory

An enormous volume of noise

Even as it started

News had run round the streets like magic

It had all happened as he had foreseen:

A sudden blow

The white arrow

Triumphant phrases through the din

Control

Within measurable distance of its end

Human history-victory.

Winston's mind was running

With the crowds outside

Big Brother, the rock

In his heart as he wondered

Whether it would be of victory or defeat

Much had chnaged in him

But the final change had never happened, until this moment

A blissful dream

Soul as white as snow, walking in sunlight

The long-hoped-for bullet

Gazed up at the enormous face

To learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark mustache.

Cruel, stubborn, self-willed

Tears trickled

But it was all right, the struggle was finished

He had won over Big Brother.
