College is Just Like Elementary School

Everyone always says college is a clean slate, that you start over new
This intrigued me because for the past 17 years were nothing too exciting
I spent my days going to class where I had very few friends
I remember feeling alone in a crowded room

August 2014 rolled around faster than I thought and suddenly it was time
I settled into my new home where I had hoped to start over new
I was determined to no longer be that girl who was always alone
No, instead I’d have many friends whom I’d spend my time with
At first, this was true and then suddenly history repeated itself

I became “Canada Girl” because I wasn’t from New York or Jersey
Instead I cam from a small town in New England
Being Canada wasn’t what I signed up for
I’d mention my dislike for this new name for it wasn’t one that described me
No matter my cries they were ignored and I was still…. Canada.

My new group of friends suddenly were just like everyone else
So I began removing myself from those around me
Once again I was alone.
I began asking if this school was in fact for me.
It had everything I wanted and more but the people I’ve met were just like those back home

Now as I sit here and compose I ponder about the past semester
So much had happened that maybe… just maybe
Those stuck up, “I’m better cause I’m from NY” people will learn
That the small town girl has feelings too
And maybe, just maybe they’ll stop calling me Canada
And instead treat me like a real person

Of course this is very optimistic of me
For College may as well just be like Elementary school
The kids from NY and Jersey are the popular bullies
Myself, the girl from the small town is their prey

They may have grown up in the city but I am much stronger than they all combined
Living in the hustle and bustle of NYC is nothing compared to what I’ve gone through
NYC doesn’t compare to the alcoholic father
NYC doesn’t compare to the struggle of having very few friends
NYC doesn’t compare to being the new girl in school in 2nd grade
NYC just doesn’t compare.

They may go on to remain bullies
But I will end up on top
Because through thick and thin
Through hardships unnumbered
I, the girl from a small town, am better than they all combined
