Curtain of Fear

Location

Pay no attention to the girl behind the curtain,

That quiet one, over there.

For she is something unusual,

Something you should beware.

Pay no attention to the girl who hides

Behind her jacket, glasses, and hair.

Because she is something different,

Something that we fear.

Pay no attention to the one we don’t understand

The one that we say should be just like us

Even though she’d

Rather be hit by a bus.

Pay no attention to the one who lives in fear

Who spends every day hiding

Dreading the ridicule

That comes from her peers.

Pay no attention to the asexual girl

Who has been told that she is broken

And needs to be fixed

By being raped and beaten.

Pay no attention to that one percent

Who are told they are weird.

And that it wouldn’t make a difference

If they just disappeared.

Pay no attention to the ones who need it most.

Those who need to hear

That they’re perfect the way they are

And don’t have to live in fear.

Pay no attention to those not like you

To the ones who don’t belong.

To those who are told

Who they are is wrong.

Pay no attention to the girl behind the curtain

Just like you always do.

Even though she is screaming,

To be heard by you.
