Grey kangaroo

Grey kangaroo
(Aldinga Scrub dweller)

New homes have crept
mere sixty metres
from the Scrub,
their gardens prim
with tufty plants
hardy of habit
enduring droughts:
anigozanthos,
dun sedges
and lean grasses.

Above all though
the house-folk love
their dianellas,
leaves spiked grey-green,
though dark, flowers
a nightshade blue.

Those folk are bothered
by a cheeky
kangaroo
that nothing knows
of planners’ fences
(except to hop them)
nor knows of buffers.

That grey delights
in dianellas;
morning and night he
visits to trim them.
