I Am A Millennial

They call me a Millennial,

I was born in 1998.

The Millennial Generation:

Began in 1982

and ended in 2004.

Some call us the next
Great Generation,

but we were just born into technology.

We grew up
witnessing landlines turn into

big, block cell phones that got smaller

then grew screens.

We witnessed the birth of the smartphone
and now

we are watching them grow up

to get bigger screens

and run faster than ever.

Our colorful toys turned into colorful screens

And our parents rewarded good behavior with TV time

instead of letting us
play with our friends outside

in

the

mud.

I have lived

through the rise and fall

of YOLO

and Gangnam style

and Justin Beiber.

I was born into a time

where it is too late

to explore the lands

and a
little too early

to explore the universe.

Right now,

I can go expand our knowledge

of what lies on the bottom of the sea

but I won’t
because it is unknown…

We have no knowledge of what lurks there

and to be honest…

 I don’t have a fancy

to come face-to-face

with whatever terrific creatures

have adapted to live

without light.

I was 3 years old

when the twin towers

fell.

I knew nothing

of war

or terrorism

or the worlds outside my bedroom window.

When I was 4

I decided I wanted to be

a garbage girl.

I was 6

when I wanted to be

a Veterinarian.

I am 17 years old.

I have discovered that

I love Engineering

and I want to be

a Pharmacist.

I leave for college

in a year

and that terrifies me

because it will be one of the biggest decisions of my life

and yet…

 I still must ask

to go to the bathroom.

I love the Arizona heat.

The warm rain of the summer storms…

I sit outside

just to listen to the

thunder boom

and the lightening flash,
Creating images across the sky.

I dream of having wings

and flying
as far as I wish

Or that I am a wolf

that races through the forest.

I am part of a generation

that is said to fill the work gap

and take care of those

who are Baby Boomers.

My father and mother

are part of Generation X

and

the generation after me

is too young to be given a
name

because

the oldest has only just reached

the age of 11

and the youngest

has just been born.

I am 17 years old.

I am a Millennial.
