If I had but one love to give

Location

If I had but one Love to give,

Would I have Courage to love Thee?

Seemingly my Love is misgived:

Thou hast not loved me.

If I had seen a Bird alone,

It limping with a broken wing,

Would I have mended that Bird's Flight,

Aware it would go?

I saw Thee in the ocean air,

My heart then needed crutches.

Those rain drops running through Thy Hair,

Like Angel's touches.

You, Bird, are completely helpless,

Not one thing can You offer me,

And yet You need the World from me.

I can't tell You 'no.'

Wet, weathered, water-logged I knew

In that Moment Thee were the one,

That somehow I'd spend Life with Thee,

'Him' we'd overcome.

Be still, Bird, come in out of Storm;

Here's Respite from Tempest strong.

Though tomorrow You will leave me,

Be near all Night long.

Do tell me, What was He I wasn't:

Was He a better Friend than me?

Was He a better Love than me?

No, He really wasn't.

I know to You I'm just a means:

I patch up You, then You go off.

I gave my Soul; You took my Heart.

You never loved me.

If I had but one Love to give,

Would I have Courage to love You?

I would not make me do it, no,

But I have no Choice.
