Jesus Christ Gets Honor Roll

I ripped my heart from my chest, as I am apt to do;

"Do you believe in God?" Does "God" believe in you?

I wasn't raised a Catholic, but I know Baptists,

And I can tell you they're all the same parlor tricks.

I shouldn't have to believe in God to go to school,

My education is not a bartering chip, a political tool.

Unless God is coming down to teach me arithmetic,

Then I suggest He keep his holy nose out of it.

"I don't have to know my ABC's." Because Jesus Christ is stalking me.

As long as I have the good lord's attention, knowledge is last priority,

As long as I pay tithes, to maintain the line, divine; the great divide,

In the sand, where human lives seem to stop mattering, and no one asks why?

Why God stops caring when your passport does not read “Americana”,

When you’re sitting in a cell because a cop smelled marijuana.

God doesn’t listen to police scanners and watching the news makes him depressed,

Only Abraham begs for his, “Christian nation”, where your poverty is blessed,

I scraped the words from my skin; belief in nothing?

I believe only in the will of man, and man is something.

What prejudice, that we let rule, is living in the public schools?

Jesus Christ gets honor roll.

This poem is about:
My community
My country
Our world
