It's understood to keep the day away from night

In a fear that the dark might quell the light

Some say that we are all the same

Lovely are those who know what's right

But so it seemed a cryin' shame

That man alone was left to blame

For what went on in time of strife

What does it mean to have a name?

As grapes perched on the vine of life

Each one succulent and perfectly ripe

Equal to the next in taste and feel

The fruits that don't confront the knife

We are the grapes in this respect; a thought surreal

Despite a proclivity to lie and steal

But that alone won't condemn our fate

The world has deeper wounds that need to heal

Bold are those who defy the state;

The laws etched in ancient slate

We need to look beyond the sign

And live in peace, a notion not too great

I mean these words in ev'ry line

To be of sound body and mind

One day they'll hear our song

And leave no broken soul behind

At the waking break of dawn

I hope that love again will show

That even if my voice is gone,

I won't agree with you, Jim Crow
