The List

You know, now that I think about it, I could be added to that list
A list that's probably endless
By the second growing by the millions
Just wondering if it's some kind of trend
Like Falling dominoes that I fear has no end
Nevertheless add me to that list..
That endless list of children who grow up fatherless

say if one was to write down all their names
Surely that paper could fill fifty five freight trains
Or store them on a computer and watch it explode
because of the massive HARD DRIVE overload
Of names
Seems the world is filled with absent fathers, they're all I see
Not even sure what I father is anymore, can you tell me
Cause the only fathers I see are the.ones on tv,
the ones that are make believe,
the ones I create in my head that seem to be no more than a dream
I.guess somewhere in someone's family tree
a fruit created a fatherless seed
And that seed went on reproducing
The same way it was created resulting
Sea of fatherless seeds resulting
In a forest of fatherless trees
Who are unaware of their evolution
If there was a book entitled deadbeat dads there'd be so much to read
I've heard forty five too many bad-daddy stories

Nevertheless put me on the list,
that endless list
of children who grow up fatherless

Having an absent parent leaves a hole in your heart
An underlying, perpetual invisible in birthmark
What should you expect from a child who began their race with a bad start
Their futures equivalent to a question mark
Because it's hard to reach for the stars when you've only known there was a ceiling

if only they could step up, Help us by giving real love
Know that we need more than a few phone calls, and some holiday hugs
Though I suppose it is hard to draw something you've never actually seen before

But if only us as a community
Could just realize that the equation that looks like
A child raised by a single.mother
to the power of babysitting little brothers
divided by mommy's low income,
minus the support of a father
plus the poorly funded public schools
times the the cost to feed four growing children on minimum wage with rent that's more the half a month's pay
Doesn't have to be equivalent to a future filled with foolishness and ignorance

When you take this equation and add
Dedication and elbow grease do the math
Then multiply
disadvantages by
The amount of stars in the sky
Because they each represent
open opportunities
If we looked at gray skies
and saw sunshine we would be alright
If we looked at our varied difficulties
And adversities
And saw endless possibilities
there would be no end to our success
nevertheless
add me to that list
a list that's probably endless
by the millisecond growing by the billions
add me too
to that list of children who grow up fatherless
D-E-J-A-S-H-A-N-A B-O-Y-D
Yes that's right, that's me
