Memories with Me
Poem by Josephine Hill As told by Joseph Hill As told by Joseph Hill
Nothing can take away the memories you’ve had with me
It was me and you baby in the Lincoln with the heated seats
When we had that Impala, we were really running then
But before all that it was Temple Hills, Anacostia and now Suitland
I would hoist you on my shoulders and walk for miles with my baby girl
It was like only you and me living in this world
When you would fall asleep on me in the metro
I’d never want to let you go
Nothing can take away the memories you’ve had with me
You know you were my good luck charm too?
I would play your birthday for my numbers every chance I got to
I’ve never seen a little girl eat up food like you do,
The Ruby Tuesday’s Triple play had nothing on you
I would take you to the Mess hall and the Rec Center on the army base
I would show you the sword room at my workplace,
When you were a little girl, it would break my heart when you’d fall
I would pick you up and ice your knot
Baby girl, you’re my one and all
Nothing can take away the memories you’ve had with me
I would push you on the swing and do the “underdog”
When you got older I told you a wise saying—something about a bullfrog
I would call you up and say, “How’s my baby doing?”
You have always made me proud; just keep doing what you’re doing
You know, I’ve been sick for awhile now but lately I’ve been feeling weaker
Stay focused in school and don’t worry about your Daddy
“I’m a fighter and a soldier,”
Spending time with my Josephine is where I wanna be
Nothing can take away the memories you’ve had with me
Response
I love you very much Daddy
I love all my time with you
You are my bestfriend and my motivation
There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you
I’ll keep you in my heart and mind
Nothing can take away the memories I’ve had with you
