The Midnight Hour

Here it is, the midnight hour

Staring into the dark of night

Contemplating love and life

How each night is a fight

In search of sleep

A temporary respite

From all that ails me

A few hours to forget

Put out of my mind

A long-ago love affair

Mistakes that cannot be altered

A life lived without care

I thought that running away

From the time and place

Escaping unscathed

Would all these things erase

Tortured by the memories

Haunted by the past

Not running fast enough

The memories last and last
