My Friend

Sun, 07/08/2018 - 19:55 -- im89la

I met her first in junior high school

We still had innocence

Still we were young and naive of the world

Dancing circles around each other and playing jump rope together

Back then we were children of our parents’ friends

She returned years later at my door

Even with curtains drawn she knew my hardships

She knew what pain I housed in my heart

I pushed her away, ignored her for so long

Still she relented, and the wall I built so meticulously crumbled to the ground

We embraced each other as best friends

Sharing each tear shed and keeping secrets we knew others would not understand

She kept my secrets and I kept her friendship

Even with no one around, I could still lean on her

From then on we were lovers

Always together, always longing for the other

In happiness, she chased me

In sadness, I chased her

Only closest of friends would know her face

And to the world we were only acquaintances

Our past holds troubles, innocence, ignorance

Our future shines like the moon on a clear night

Together we face the world

Poetry and I

Through each jump and skip

Over each rock and log

She will say what she once said so long ago

“You are never alone”
