(Not Exactly) Land of the Free, Home of the Brave

Land of the free, home of the brave
That's what we're all taught
But is it bravery or cockiness when a white man with a gun walks into a Little Caesar's and orders with a smooth voice?
Is it freedom or just simple politics when a nonviolent, non white drug offender gets 5 plus years in the pen?

I think we need to be honest with our youth when we teach them about this country
As we pledge allegiance to a flag that is stained in the blood of its own citizens
As we sing about liberty that we still haven't seen
As we learn about how our freedom is controlled more by ridiculous public leaders than a righteous moral compass
As we make up a new synonym for bravery called cockiness

We need to be honest with our young citizens
And tell them what their parents signed them up for when dear old mom gave birth to them
How the weight is on us to fix the problems the generation before us has caused or is currently causing
We need to tell them about the true inhabitants of America
And how America is not really
Land of the free, home of the brave

Not for us
