A penny

Mark 12:44 New English Translation (NET Bible)

The Widow’s Offering

41 Then he] sat down opposite the offering box and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins worth less than a penny. 43 He called his disciples and said to them, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box] than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their wealth But she, out of her poverty, put in what she had to live on, everything she had.

Villages, towns, and cities have more than doubled

Where has time gone as it dropped from my mind?

Why did it leave me sickly more and more behind?

There is no way of catching up as I always stumble

Born to be a penny in someone else’s pocket

Mixed up with some nickels, quarters and dimes

All in the same environment thinking all is fine

Until we’re grabbed and exchanged for another docket

Once I was noticed by children and now easily discarded

When I’m lost somewhere on the ground, few will pick me up

Only little children will still value me as a treasure as such

But to adults really just a mite has no value to the fool-hearted

It is understandable in this world of plenty

Even a dime and a quarter have lost attraction

People have been spoiled to a standard of satisfaction

That a dollar bill seems little to the spoiled and fancy

Now I’m here lost in self-searching for a place

Where I am worth something to anyone in need

in Asia or Africa could I live with God’s speed

to bring some happiness in some appointed cases?
