"Reggie"
“Reggie”
Remember when we first met?
I remember how ecstatically you sat.
Eager to see what trouble you could get into next,
I remember the first necklace I put around your neck.
You were cool, I was cool, we were cool.
Wake me up in the morning with that morning breath drool.
We ate together every morning and we never skipped a beat,
Road in mom’s car, sometimes we took the front seat.
Runs through the park and walks on the beach,
We knew each other so well, I started to understand your speech.
I remember when the rosey red blood the spewed down your leg,
When that truck hit you "Sorry Reggie" I said.
If I could I would cop a time machine,
And save you from the accident and create a new scene.
When you bled, I bled and we bled the bright red droplets.
I still fill your water up,
Same spot it's always been.
In hope that one day, it'll get drank
And you'll return again.
Wipe out everything, I don't need it, it's whatever.
Just know that you’re the best dog, and there isn't one better.
I keep you alive in the elegy, but only figuratively,
Just know you were my top dog, and I mean that, literally.
