Rise

bullet holes in their bodies

blood running down their clothes

what's the difference between now and sixty years ago?

black men are still dying left and right in the streets

instead now it's from gunshots

not the infamous lynchings

we've been torn down as a people for many years too long

what's it going to take before our patience is gone?

we're told to stay quiet

don't say a word and you might live

just follow their orders and see the sun rise again

what kind of world is that to live in

when you may get shot

getting pulled over or simply sitting in a parking lot

although it's not right to say that every cop is at fault

but to ignore there's an issue is where you are wrong

we should not play the victim and sit on our hands

we need to show that we're stronger

and together we'll stand

we've been oppressed for too long and now it's time to rise

to fight back like they did in my grandfather's time

when will we have someone to lead us again

like protester Dr. King

or the fighter Malcolm X

we need someone able to bring us together

to fight for our rightful justice now more than ever

no matter who you are or what race you fit in

as a people we all need to start making changes

stick up for one another or our world will continue to shatter

because no matter what your skin color

your life matters
