SAM

Need a definition
to fill in the gaps
that flood when
the clouds drip.

And we're a body
that breaks, and a soul
that doesn't seem much, with
value that can't be monetized
and a meaning hardly known
to us, we make a map, to navigate
through each setting sun til a new
day is found, but new days connect
to the old and the present isn't enough
to live fully.

So music numbs reality,
and sex, leads us out of the body,
and love is a memory, and a moment,
and friendship is a trust, though winter
comes, we cover in these blankets, keep
warm, because we were warned of the
tides that could kill us and splits in the
universe, and white lightning, and the
end of time.

We're still searching for a definition
to last us a lifetime, because athlete is
temporary and you can't type words
with arthritic hands and kids grow
into adults and there was a time when
you were not a mother, and you did
not know the father and what will
they write on your gravestone?

There's a window only the lost can
peek through, where intimacy fills
the mind long enough to leave yesterday
behind and pretty is feeling bones through
rotting flesh and normal is knowing that you're
not the person you were supposed to be.

The empty corners are fully of ghosts,
and little angels pop out of cold hands
that touch, because for a second, we think
they're there to rescue us.

I've seen elders jump off a little too early,
wiping away fog on the wrong side of the
window thinking that would make the
driver see, I've heard them babbling on
the phone in a language of disgust, only
known to them, the language always left
their lips, every day since it reached them.

And there's someone watching.

I've seen smoke filled skies, the aftermath
of too much freedom, ended with a crash,
and a girl who wouldn't return to class, I've
known of the needle piercing flesh, and I've
known of despair, but not enough to know
why someone would risk their youth, for an
effect that would end in a forever drop.

And there's someone watching.

Waiting for the next day to unfold, trying
to decide, is there an aim, or is this enough
for me, there's a forest of people trying to
find out what strong is, still searching for
the who in who am I, I suppose the ocean
needs something to swallow and I suppose
it needs a shark to guard its seas.
