Self-Destruct

'Self-destruct mode begun'

The automated voice declares

'Complete annihilation in 3...2...1...'

Aw sh**, life’s so unfair

The last thing you see

As your world explodes

Is a burst of flame rushing towards you

Just before your vision implodes

You dimly remember that unanswered question

About that infamous white light

But maybe that was just speculation

Maybe death is simply night

An all-encompassing black cloak

From which one cannot escape

The feeling making you wish to choke

Just to get away

But can one die within death?

A far-fetched idea, it seems to be

For what is gone cannot be lost, like breath

Still, the answer no one can foresee

You feel yourself rise on a draft of warm air

Only to look down and see the remnants of your life there

As you watch in fascinated horror

A heavy iron chain snakes around you shin

Like that of Jacob Marley, slightly shorter

And much to your chagrin

It tugs you back to the destruction below

Plunging you back to the way things had been

Caught between two worlds, tugged to and fro

But neither side is allowed to win

They speak in your mind, listen to a voice

Now it’s up to you

And you face a most vicious choice

Live again as a lie, or die for the truth
