Teach Me To Learn

Dear teacher,

Here’s the thing–

Just because you’re bored

Doesn’t mean we all want the bell to ring

I know that’s crazy

That some of us like school

That we like to learn things

That sometimes we think it’s cool

But you don’t care

Whether we learn or not

You’re more concerned

About if what that girl is wearing is too hot

You care about dress code and insurance

But what matters most to you

Is how much funding you get

Don’t deny it, it’s true

You teach us to memorize

You don’t teach us to learn

Whether we do well next year

Is none of your concern

You teach us so that we pass

So that you can be done

With this class, with this year

So that you can just move on to the next one

What good does that do?

For the students, not much

For the schools, they get money,

New computers and such

Maybe I’m the only one

That thinks this way

But I’d rather learn than get a SMARTboard

Any day

Teach me

So that I know

Why Napoleon was exiled

Or what really happened to Vincent Van Gogh

Why planes can fly

Or why wood has a tendency to burn

How to use the quadratic formula

Teacher, I want to learn
