Are we really in a better world today?
Hatred surrounds us, incessant prejudice confounds us
I can be thankful I'm allowed to vote
Grateful I can read books that famous blacks wrote
Proud that I can sit in a melting pot classroom
So happy that at least I know a taste of freedom
Flipping through photo books, let's look
My grandparents era
A time so far gone
Only allowed to be with their kind
Something now that puzzles my mind
Segregation was the way of life
It was never questioned, it was the way of life
Strong, strong people broke those walls down
Allowing for opportunity to come around
Why did these saviors have to die?
No more Dr King to speak to us,
but his spirit still lies within us
Now, a man sits within a white house
Looking at a country that belongs to him
A man of a particular race
That was was treated so poorly in the very same place
Today, we're in a different world
There's been a 360 shift in thought
It's alright to question society
and to strongly push for equality
At work, in schools, in the media,
I'm proud to say
I'm no longer afraid
My voice will be heard
My cries shall not be deafened
At least for now, I taste and bathe in freedom
of speech, to vote, to write, to live, to breathe,
and simply to be.
