Turning the Other Cheek
Time cannot heal all hurts; that old adage is a lie.
Some wounds are just too deep
And the memories alone bring the sting to the surface.
The hands of the clock tick forward, moving on,
While you struggle to mask the
Exposed, raw, vulnerable person you’ve become.
The result is a wall, built to keep you safely in
And the rest of the world tightly out.
Trust cannot so easily be tossed aside;
It isn’t some trinket to be played with
Because it is so fragile that one wrong word,
One misdeed can shatter it, and you, irreparably.
Aches and pains of the body are nothing
Compared to those of the heart and soul.
But no matter how much it hurts,
Life goes on.
Anger is the all-consuming emotion that
Burns everything else in its wake.
It’s the rumbling volcano deep in your stomach
That is about to burst because you keep suppressing
Your true feelings.
You feel the irritation itching through your veins,
Like insects inching just beneath your skin.
You struggle to cage your serpent tongue
From saying something it shouldn’t.
You taste acid; the snake just wants to strike,
But you must stay calm, you mustn’t unleash the monster.
Anger is the rawness of a person;
Anger melts away the mask
And reveals who somebody truly is.
Forgiveness is a two-way street:
It can be given or received, accepted or denied.
It’s the ability to accept that what happened, happened
And no matter how hard you try,
Nothing can change it.
Forgiveness is giving up the opportunity for revenge
Even though somebody has wronged you,
Even though it’s not fair, even though it hurts.
And pride is often the bitterest pill to swallow…
But more than that,
Forgiveness is being the bigger person in public,
Then falling to pieces in private.
