"When Silence Breaks"
By Alan J Winters
Behind the laughter,
a storm gathers
words sharpened into knives,
echoes that never fade.
Some carry the weight inward,
their pain a whisper
that ends in silence too soon.
Others let the anger fester,
a fire that consumes,
turning grief into violence,
and sorrow into rage.
Hallways remember
the footsteps of the broken,
classrooms echo
with the cries of the unheard.
Bullying is not a wound alone
it is a chain reaction,
a darkness that can end lives,
or shatter them beyond repair.
Companion Reflection:
"The Cost of Cruelty"
By Alan J Winters
Bullying is often dismissed as a rite of passage, but its scars run deeper than many admit. For some, the pain becomes unbearable, leading to self-destruction. For others, the anger turns outward, erupting in violence that devastates communities. The cost of cruelty is not measured only in tears it is measured in lives lost, futures stolen, and trust broken. To confront bullying is to confront the possibility of tragedy, and to choose compassion is to prevent it.
Dedication
For those whose voices were silenced by cruelty, and for the communities forever changed by its aftermath. May this serve as a reminder that words and actions matter, and that kindness can be the difference between despair and hope.
Author’s Note
This piece was written to acknowledge the darkest consequences of bullying. It is not meant to glorify violence, but to bear witness to the reality that unchecked cruelty can lead to tragedy. In telling these truths, I hope to encourage awareness, compassion, and the courage to intervene before pain becomes irreversible.
Prose Piece:
"Echoes in the Hallway"
By Alan J Winters
Bullying is not just a momentary cruelty it is a seed planted in silence, watered by shame, and left to grow in the shadows. For some, the pain turns inward, becoming a relentless whisper that convinces them life is no longer worth living. For others, the anger festers, twisting grief into rage, until violence erupts in ways that scar entire communities.
The hallway remembers. It remembers the child who walked alone, carrying burdens too heavy for their age. It remembers the laughter that cut like knives, the whispers that followed like ghosts. And it remembers the silence the silence of teachers who did not see, of peers who did not speak, of systems that did not protect.
When silence breaks, it does not always break gently. Sometimes it shatters into tragedy: a life ended too soon, a family left in mourning, a community torn apart by violence. These echoes remind us that bullying is not harmless it is a chain reaction that can destroy futures and unravel trust.
To confront bullying is to confront this darkness honestly. To choose compassion is to interrupt the chain, to replace silence with solidarity, and cruelty with care. Only then can the hallways remember something different: not echoes of despair, but voices of hope.
About the Author
Hi, I’m Alan Winters. I was born and raised in Montevideo, Minnesota, and now live in Benson. I’m a retired Army veteran and a small engine mechanic by trade. I used to run my own repair shop, and these days I still enjoy refurbishing outdoor power equipment and selling it from my home shop as a hobby.
When I’m not working with engines, I love spending time outdoors — fishing, camping, swimming, and enjoying time with family. I also have a passion for cooking and baking.
Writing has always been a big part of my life. I’m the author of two poetry collections, Tempest of My Soul, Volumes 1 & 2, and a novella titled Dana. All of my books are available on Amazon in both eBook and paperback.
