This is America

In my small bed I hear the sounds outside the door

Girls screaming, boys being boys

Moms and dads saying yes, saying no

Who would say no to a face in need?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

I lay there, eyes to the wall, dreaming of better days

When maybe the sun was shining and the warmth felt nice

Moms and dads are still saying no

Who would say no to a face in pain?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

I feel like there may be no hope, as here he goes, she goes

I’m in this building seemingly alone, though next room over there are more

Moms and dads say yes, yes, yes; for me it’s always no

Who would say no to a face without hope?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

Instead of crying, I lay silently, just wishing

Oh here they come! Here they come! Straight for me

Moms and dads please say yes, please say yes

Who would say no to a face like mine?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

I cannot hold back the excitement and joy I feel for these people

They’ve taken me in

Mom and dad have said yes

Who would have ever said no to a face like mine?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

We had a choice to let me live in that place I called home

But instead we chose the life I live now

Mom and dad, why did you say yes?

Why couldn’t you have said no to a face like mine?

But this is America, and we have a choice.

I hurt day in and day out, as nothing I do is right

Hit from the left, hit from the right, starved through the night

Mom and dad, why did you take me in?

Why couldn’t you have said no to a face like mine?

This is America, and you had a choice.

My paws hurt, my luscious fur is falling out, my eyes are withered

My collar digs deep, as I long for just a little sleep in my bed back home

Mom and dad, why did you do this to me?

Why couldn’t you have said no to a face like mine?

This is America, and while you had a choice, I had none.
