The Best
Education
seems to be slowly crawling towards equality
but the "quality" in equality is slowing being extracted.
I am the biggest advocate you will find
for giving kids the education their skills need
and for individualized plans.
But when will legislators
and board members
and principals
and PTO moms
remember
that the gifted child needs individualized education too.
That child shouldn't be weighed down
by another child receiving the education they need.
One child shouldn't be hindered to help another.
Education
is slowly crawling towards equality.
But when will intelligence be rewarded?
College applications
and scholarships
and community members
and school administrators
and local newspapers
report and praise the kid with a 2.0
who ran the fastest mile
or caught the winning pass
or who secretly cheats on their math test to maintain that 2.0.
But tell them you have a 4.0, unweighted, and a 4.67 weighted,
and they'll want more.
"What sports do you play?"
"What clubs are you in?"
"How do you help your community?"
I spend every ounce of intellect and critical thought
trying to get something out of my state mandated, paperwork filled education,
and I have.
I've become a better person in AP English.
I've prepared myself for college in APUSH.
I've taken AP Calc because" it would look bad not to take a math your senior year"
even though I will be a history major
and never have to calculate the area under the curve ever again in my life.
When will my intelligence and my drive and my passion for learning be enough?
I am smart.
I am gifted.
I am lucky.
But I work for everything I have.
Recognize that.
