A Guide to Loss, from a Grown-Up's Point of View

heartbreak

is him watching you cry

him squeezing your hands

before he tells you goodbye

heartbreak

is trying to put the pieces back together

realizing that your best friend is gone

that there is, in fact, an "end" in "friend"

heartbreak

is crying every day for months

screaming into the dark of night

smoking to ease the pain

heartbreak

is moving on

knowing that he was the one

knowing that he is the one

heartbreak is acceptance

that the end

has happened

heartbreak

is

common

heartbreak

is

becoming

an adult

and so it shapes me
